Sit down with Stephanie Kula and her new book Zookeeper for a Day
February 10th, 2023Where did the inspiration from your book come from?
One of the most common questions that children ask me when they find out I'm a Zookeeper is "What do you get to do with the animals all day?". It's a great question! So I thought a picture book would be a fun way to answer this by educating and also capturing the imagination of all the inquisitive minds out there.
What is your favourite childhood book, that most influenced you as a writer?
I can’t say there was one in particular that I loved or found most influential to me. I loved reading from a young age and, of course, animal related books were often my go-to. Wombat Stew, Possum Magic, Rainbow Fish, The Very Hungry Caterpillar… a lot of wonderful children’s books that still bring a smile to my face all these years later. And that is what I wanted to bring to my book- a story and illustrations that were memorable and left the readers with feelings of love and happiness.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
No, but it is definitely a role that I have enjoyed falling into. It feels like there are endless possibilities as a writer which is very exciting for someone who loves being creative and educating others.
How long did it take you to write your book?
It took me just over a year from the first draft to the final edit. I was lucky enough to have support and guidance from my Mum, who was a primary school teacher for almost 40 years, so therefore has a lot of experience when it comes to children’s books.
I was also constantly inspired by the wonderful animals and Keepers I’d see at work every day.
What is the most challenging thing about writing?
For this age range, it can be difficult to get feedback from the target market!
I also struggled because I could have written a novel on what a Zookeeper’s day can entail. So trying to keep it short and sweet was tough at times.
What do you hope young readers take away with them after reading your book?
I hope young readers get a fun insight into what Zookeepers do, as there is much more to the job than just feeding animals. But more importantly I hope to inspire all future animal advocates. We are lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful wildlife; it is our job to protect them and their future.
